Slots

What can I say? Slot Machines are the single most profitable department in the modern casino. The reason for this shouldn't be lost on the gambler. Slots have, over all, a relatively high percentage of hold when compared to the other games (about 17% over all, which is about midrange among the table games), they are relatively inexpensive to purchase and license, they require far less skilled help to operate than table games and most of all they require absolutely no skill or thought to play.

Can Slots be systematically beat? On the whole no! but given a team of five or six people, an adequate bankroll, and the time, certain non-linked progressive machines can.

First you have to locate a machine that has a jackpot large enough to be worthwhile. This is accomplished by finding out how many positions are on each reel of the machine (it varies from 20 to 40, depending on the particular machine). You then arrive at the chance of winning the jackpot by multiplying that number by the reels i.e. in the case of a 20 stop 3 reel machine you would multiply 20x20 to get a result of 400 and then 400x20 to get a result of 8,000. This makes the odds of hitting a jackpot 8,000 to 1 assuming a single winning combination (a safe assumption). OK, with me so far? now you multiply the odds by the number of coins (or the amount of money) you have to put in the machine to qualify for the jackpot (the maximum number of coins). For simplicity's sake, we will assume a 3 reel 20 stop dollar machine that has a maximum play of three coins.

As you can see, if the odds run true (which they never do in the short run) you will have to find a machine with at least a $24,000 jackpot, and have a bankroll of $24,000 to risk to even begin. If the odds run true and you cycle the machine once through the wheel (all combinations of the possible outcome) then, assuming that the machine adds 1% of the drop to the jackpot (typical) and that you can play twice in a minute (again typical), you will have invested $24,000 and 66 hrs. 40 min. to win $240. And remember, you need a team of say five people because you MUST play every play from the time you first sit down until the machine pays off.

Now for reality, you really need a machine with at least double and preferably triple the break even payout. This means that you are looking for, in our example case a non-linked progressive machine with a $72,000 or higher jackpot. Linked machines won't work as you will be feeding a jackpot that could just as easily be won by someone else. Any small payouts you receive will probably be offset by fluctuations in the odds so haven't been added to this example.
