Poker Hands

Ties - Yes, there are ties in poker, as there is no suit ranking. All ties are decided by splitting the pot between the participants.
High Card - OK it doesn't happen often but failing all else the high card takes the pot. In poker there is no suit ranking so any ace, etc. If I have to tell you that an ace beats a King and so on you don't have any business wandering around loose, let alone in a poker room.
One Pair - Failing any other outcome the highest pair takes the pot
Two Pair - If more than one hand contains two pair, the highest single pair is the deciding factor. This hand is commonly declared as whatever the highest pair is, up (e.g., you have a pair of Kings and a pair of threes you have Kings up).
Straight - This is simply any five cards in numerical order, in case of two straights the highest card wins.

Flush - This is any five cards of the same suit, as with the straight the highest card takes the hand if there are more than one flush.

Straight Flush - This is any straight that is all in one suit.
Full House - Three of one card and two of another.
Four of a Kind - All four of any card.
Royal Flush - This hand is so rare that it deserves it's own name, it is a Straight Flush, Ace high (A, K, Q, J, 10, of a single suit).

As always I advocate a complete education. Some of the best books that I've found on Poker are: Caro's Fundamental Secrets of Winning Poker and The Body Language of Poker: Mike Caro's Book of Tells.
